Museums & Attractions

Explore Johnson County's history and culture with a visit to one of the county's many museums and attractions. Get the full JoCo experience by exploring an 1860s stagecoach stop, bottle feeding baby goats and trekking through miles of botanical gardens.

  • Deanna Rose Children’s Farmstead: Walk through the red barn, and take a trip back to the days of frontier farm living. Visit more than 250 animals, from birds to bison to baby goats, and explore history of the era at a one-room schoolhouse, blacksmith shop and Kanza Indian encampment.

  • Ensor Park and Museum: This historic site in Olathe was the home of Jacob and Ida Ensor and their children in the late 1800s. Explore the two-story farmhouse and peg barn and view furniture, utensils, clothing, quilts and ham radio equipment from the era.

  • Johnson County Museum: Learn about the history of Johnson County at this museum in the Johnson County Arts and Heritage Center, from Native American lands to modern-day suburban life. The centerpiece of the museum is a 1950s-era All-Electric House, a snapshot of mid-20th century living.

  • Lanesfield Historic Site: This limestone schoolhouse is the last remaining structure in the former town of Lanesfield, now in present-day Edgerton. The oldest operating schoolhouse in Johnson County, the historic site is open on the second Saturday each month. 

  • Legler Barn Museum & Depot: On the grounds of Sar-Ko-Park Trails Park in Lenexa, Legler Barn was built in 1864 by the Legler family. Lenexa's heritage museum and restored train depot offer a glimpse of the city's railroad and prairie history.

  • Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop & Farm: Originally a stop along the Santa Fe, California and Oregon trails, which originated in Westport, Missouri, the James and Lucinda Mahaffie's house and farm are pieces of living history, offering a hands-on experience with 1860s frontier life.

  • Merriam Historic Plaza: A gateway to the city of Merriam, this historic plaza features 12 historic markers along a walking path, a bear fountain sculpture, pollinator and rain gardens, and the Merriam Visitors Bureau.

  • Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens: This 300-acre arboretum and botanical gardens houses more than 1,700 plant species. Take a stroll around Margaret's Pond, stop by the Monet statue and spend some time in the LongHouse Visitors Center.

  • Scheels Overland Park Soccer Complex: Covering 96 acres, this soccer complex in Overland Park, named a top soccer city by Livability.com, features 12 lighted, synthetic turf fields, a fieldhouse, concessions and a playground.

  • Shawnee Indian Mission State Historic Site: The Shawnee Indian Mission served as a manual training school for more than 20 Indian nations in the mid-1800s. This 12-acre campus features historic buildings and gardens, and the grounds are open to the public.

  • Shawnee Town 1929: Visit this historic 1920s farm town in Shawnee, featuring 10 recreated historic buildings that capture Shawnee's farming and business heritage. Buildings to explore include a farmhouse, barn, grocery store, service station, school and barber shop.

  • Theatre in the Park: Come see a show at one of the country's largest community theaters. Theatre in the Park, located in Shawnee Mission Park, presents Broadway-style musicals at this outdoor pavilion throughout the summer.

  • 9/11 Memorial: This memorial in Overland Park honors the victims of the September 11 attacks and includes a steel beam from Ground Zero, education panels, a victim's panel, granite tiles from the World Trade Center and a weeping wall.
